Lunch Bite Object Talk: Reproduction of the RI Regiment Uniform

Anderson House

Friday, December 11, 2015

12:30 PM

Join SSRI at the Anderson House (2118 Massachusetts Avenue NW) for a discussion hosted by the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati on the role of African Americans in the Continental Army and a presentation of a reproduction of the first Rhode Island Regiment Uniform.

A few years into the Revolutionary War, Rhode Island struggled to meet the enlistment quota for able bodied troops set by the Continental Congress.  To meet the need, the Rhode Island legislature voted in February of 1778 to allow the enlistment of slaves.  If enslaved persons served in teh army, they would receive their freedom.  Soon, the First Rhode Island Regiment of the Continental Army formed and was mostly comprised of African-America soldiers.  The "Black Regiment" as it came to be known, served valiantly and even significantly contributed to victory at the Siege of Yorktown.  Eleesha Tucker, director of education, will present a reproduction uniform of a Rhode Island Regiment soldier, created for the Society's teachers and students outreach programs, and the story of African-Americans in the Continental Army.  The presentation will last approximately thirty minutes with time afterward for up-close viewing of the reproduction uniform.

General Nathanael Greene and Brigadier General James Mitchell Varnum founded the Rhode Island Society of the Cincinnati following their service in the American Revolution under General George Washington.

We hope you will join us for this free event!  It is two blocks from the Dupont Metro Station.
