The Hidden History of Rhode Island with Michael J. Simpson, Research Fellow

Wednesday, June 23, 2021
Virtual
6:30-7:30 pm

Michael J. Simpson's presentation of “The Hidden History of Rhode Island” will be separated into four portions. The first will briefly highlight the Native history of Narragansett Bay, using archaeological and ethnographic evidence to paint a picture of what life was like for the eight thousand years prior to when European contact began in 1524. The second portion will demonstrate how Indigenous enslavement, and a slave trade to the West Indies, preceded the African slave trade of the eighteenth century-- sometimes using the same ships to bring enslaved Natives to the Caribbean, and then returning north with enslaved Africans. This portion will also seek to demonstrate the intricate ways in which the Indigenous and African experience, while distinct, often overlapped when it came to enslavement. The third portion will move to highlight Rhode Island’s exorbitant role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade in the eighteenth century, where merchants from Rhode Island controlled between 60 and 90 percent of the American trade in enslaved Africans. Finally, the closing portion of the presentation will highlight some of the fascinating stories and social histories of Africans and African Americans in Newport during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
